Director, Austin Water Utility

The City of Austin, Texas is currently seeking to hire a new Director of the Austin Water Utility.

With a population of 719,000 and an annual budget of $2.3 billion, Austin is widely known for its quality of life, active and involved residents, high tech business climate, and its cultural, social, and economic diversity. The City is consistently ranked among the most livable and safest in America. One of the fastest growing cities in the country, Austin culture reflects a city government that keeps it's vision in the forefront while planning for the future.


The selected candidate will have a unique opportunity to transform Austin Water Utility to a world class organization. The new Director:
- will oversee a critical period where the City is investing $1 Billion in capital improvement projects to bolster the Austin Water Utility's infrastructure
- ensure that the City remains compliant with EPA ratings, and
- strengthen the organization to meet the current and long-term needs of the city through water conservation and cultivation.

The ideal candidate will be a cutting edge thinker with a track record for improving operational efficiency, successful program implementation in technology, public policy and meeting the challenges of water utilities in today's challenging environment. The candidate will be a team player and strategic planner with the ability to effectively balance the City's needs with the community's economic and environmental interests. The new Director, will be a strong leader that is assertive and proactive in order to provide leadership and direction for the department.

Along with managing the daily operations, a $342 million budget and overseeing 1100 employees, the new director needs to be able to effectively build a team, manage and motivate staff and make Austin Water Utility a high achieving and nationally renowned organization.

Requirements include the equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or Public Administration or related field and 10 years of progressively responsible experience with at least 5 years of supervisory experience. A PE certification is desired.
