Job Description:

The City of Fort Myers, Florida, the county seat of Lee County, is located on the Caloosahatchee River in southwest Florida, midway between Tampa and Miami. The City covers 48 square miles and has a rapidly growing and highly diverse population of more than 65,000. Fort Myers issued $650 million in new construction permits in 2006 and was ranked as one of the top median metro cities in the nation for doing business by Inc. Magazine.

Fort Myers is a full service city with a staff of approximately 960 full-time and 100 part-time employees. The City’s general fund budget is more than $86 million. Its total budget is more than $350 million. Fort Myers functions as a Council/Manager form of government. In fact, the City is seeking its first full-time City Manager. The Council/Manager form of government, along with the creation of a new sixth councilmanic ward, were established by voter referendum in April of 2005. Under this system, the City is governed by a seven-member, nonpartisan City Council consisting of a Mayor, elected at large, and six Council members elected by wards to staggered terms.

The City is looking for a success-proven manager with the equivalent of a Master’s degree in public administration and sufficient experience as a local government manager (possibly a full-range assistant) to have achieved a record of measurable management and community accomplishments. Accomplishments in downtown and neighborhood revitalization, fiscal management, the application of innovative solutions to urban problems, and partnering with public and private organizations are of particular interest. Prefer chief executive experience from growth community of comparable size and complexity to Fort Myers. Must be a strong leader with proven strengths in land use planning, redevelopment, community and economic development, council/manager relations, budgeting and finance, infrastructure maintenance and expansion, organizational development and analysis and community relations.
