Job Description:

Fort Collins, home to Colorado State University, has a population of 151,000 within 56 square miles and is located at the northern edge of the picturesque Rocky Mountain Front Range. Fort Collins is consistently listed among the top cities by national magazines and organizations for its great schools, low crime, good jobs in the high-tech field, and fantastic outdoor life.

The City Attorney serves as the City’s chief legal advisor. As such he or she is responsible for providing sound and efficient legal services to City Council, City Manager, boards, commissions, and other City staff in matters relating to their official powers and duties. Responsibilities include planning, staffing and supervising the legal service needs of the City and providing legal representation for the City in all actions or suits to which the City is a party. The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council and is directly responsible to the City Council for the functions and duties assigned by the City Charter and Municipal Code. The City Attorney serves at the pleasure of the City Council.

The City Attorney's Office is comprised of the City Attorney, two Deputy City Attorneys, eight Assistant City Attorneys, two Paralegals and one Municipal Court Prosecutor.

Minimum requirements include a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law, extensive experience practicing law, knowledge of local government law and the proven ability to manage a complex law office. Active membership in the State Bar of Colorado is also required at time of appointment.

Fort Collins’ next City Attorney will be both a highly competent attorney and an effective manager. Ideally, he or she will have a broad spectrum of experience in Colorado municipal law; knowledge of Colorado water law; and an in-depth understanding of current issues confronting Colorado cities.

Experienced City Attorneys, Assistant City Attorneys and/or other senior level public and private attorneys with municipal experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
