Job Description:

Nestled on 5½ square miles along the shores of Lake Michigan's Green Bay, Menominee, Michigan offers a unique, community atmosphere perfect for raising a family or a vacation visit. During the summer, concerts in the Great Lakes Memorial Park band shell offer a delightful variety of music. In June, the Menominee Downtown Business Association hosts Family Recreation Day, offering fun for kids of all ages. The first weekend in August brings the annual Waterfront Festival with family activities, music, food, breathtaking fireworks and a parade. Other events including a car show, Christmas parade and the Da Yooper Plunge on New Year's Day, energize Menominee's waterfront downtown. Menominee also has a popular multi-use campground on the Menominee River, beaches and hiking trails all within the City limits. Menominee’s schools are excellent, its cost of living is 17% lower than the U.S. average and the local crime rate is appreciably lower than the national average.

Menominee operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The Council is composed of nine members. Eight members are elected by ward to four-year terms in each of four wards. The Mayor is elected at-large to a four-year term, is a voting member of the Council and presides at Council meetings. The City Manager is hired or removed by a majority vote of the full Council. The Manager is responsible for the efficient and effective implementation of Council goals and policies; serves as the chief administrative officer of the City and as the personnel director; coordinates the official business of the City Council; provides leadership and direction to the organization; responds to requests for information and assistance; serves as a liaison between the City staff and the City Council; and hires department heads subject to confirmation of two-thirds of the council members. Menominee’s FY 16-17 budget is $5.8 million. The City employs 57 FTE’s.

Requirements include a Master’s degree or the equivalent in Public or Business Administration or a closely related field (preferred). Attainment of the ICMA Credentialed Manager designation is also a plus. Experience as a City Manager, Assistant or Deputy City Manager or Department Head in a community where economic development, customer service, high ethical standards and open communications exist and are valued, is strongly desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job will be considered. Residency within the City of Menominee is required.
