Job Description:

The City of Fort Myers, Florida, was incorporated on March 27, 1886, and is the county seat of Lee County. The City is located on the Caloosahatchee River in southwest Florida, midway between Tampa and Miami. Fort Myers covers 48.82 square miles and has a rapidly growing and highly diverse population of more than 76,108.

Fort Myers is a full-service city with a staff of approximately 900 full-time and part-time employees. The City's general fund budget is more than $99.8 million. Its total budget is $334.6 million. Fort Myers functions as a Council/Manager form of government. The Council/Manager form of government, along with the creation of a new sixth council ward, was established by voter referendum in April of 2005. Under this system, the City is governed by a seven-member City Council consisting of a Mayor, elected at large, and six Council Members, elected by wards.

The City of Fort Myers Fire Department (FMFD) is a professional organization comprised of 120 full-time paid personnel including administrative and fire prevention personnel. An additional 21 firefighters are currently being funded through 2017 by a 2014 SAFER grant. FMFD is organized into the following divisions: Administration, Operations, Training, Special Operations, Emergency Management, Fire Prevention and Public Education Services. The Department has a current budget of approximately $21.2 million plus the SAFER grant and federal pass-through monies. The Fire Chief reports directly to the City Manager.

The new Fort Myers Fire Chief will have a proven and highly successful track record in managing a modern municipal fire department comparable to FMFD. The new chief will maintain the highest level of ethics, integrity, accountability and honor. He or she will be an effective and impartial leader with outstanding interpersonal skills, a talent for communications at all levels of the organization, strong management skills, and excellent organizational skills. The new chief must have the necessary ability to direct, manage, and affect confidence in Fire Department personnel at all levels. FMFD’s chief will represent the Fire Department before the City Council, Planning Commission and various other civic and governmental agencies.

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited college or university with a degree in Fire Administration, Public Administration or related field combined with at least ten years of professional fire service experience. This experience must include at least eight years of increasingly responsible fire supervisory, management and/or command experience or related work. Prefer Masters Degree from an accredited college or university and graduation from the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program.

Requirements further include meeting the Florida State Fire Marshal and Florida Statute requirements for certification (F.S. 633.412 and F.S. 633.414) as a Florida Firefighter II and Florida Fire Officer II. Also, must obtain within one year of hire: NIMS 100, NIMS 200, NIMS 300, NIMS 400, NIMS 700, NIMS 800 and NWCG S130/190. The new chief must either have a valid Florida driver’s license or obtain one within 30 days of hire. He or she must have an acceptable driving record. The chief must be able to read, write and speak English at a level necessary for efficient job performance. A competitive salary with excellent benefits will be provided.
