The City covers 332 square miles and is projected to add 10 square miles and 107,000 residents in the next 5 years.

Fort Worth is a charter city which operates under the council/manager form of government. The City Council consists of a Mayor elected at-large and an 8-member City Council elected from districts. The Council appoints a City Manager who is responsible for administering and coordinating municipal operations and programs. The City highly values professionalism, effectiveness and efficiency in its municipal government and is frequently recognized for its excellence. The City has won 45 awards within the last year.

Presently, TPW consists of 459 employees and has a current budget of $ 72.2 million. Major functional units include street maintenance and traffic control; facilities maintenance; storm water; transportation planning; mass transit; parking management; and engineering and construction of vertical CIP projects. Storm water utility and parking are self-supported enterprise funds. All other TPW funding is through the General Fund.

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required abilities is qualifying. A typical qualifying background would be eight years of increasingly responsible experience in professional engineering design and construction relating to transportation and public works including 4 years of administrative and supervisory experience combined with a Bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related field (Masters degree is preferred).

Must hold Texas Registration as a Professional Engineer or be able to obtain such within six months of appointment.

The ideal candidate is a visionary and proactive manager and a strategic thinker who is solution focused, uses a collaborative style, and is committed to building a strong customer service culture and improving TPW’s responsiveness to its internal and external customers. He or she must be politically astute and able to interact effectively with the City Council in making presentations and resolving issues; must understand the development process and be committed to ensuring that it is understandable and customer friendly; must have experience in a rapidly growing community; must be willing to be accessible and have visibility in the community; must have outstanding communication skills and must be an advocate for the Department and the City.
