Police Chief – City of Paducah, Kentucky

On I-24 in far western Kentucky, the City of Paducah is the seat of McCracken County. Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers The City’s historic river industries are supplemented by a growing tourism industry and a national reputation as an arts community. Downtown is a bustling area with 400 business and restaurants in 80 square blocks. Encompassing an area of 21 square miles, the City has a resident population of more than 26,000 and an estimated daytime population of 75,000.

The City is governed by a Mayor and four-member Board of Commissioners elected on a non-partisan basis. The Mayor is elected to a four-year term. Commissioners are elected for two-year terms. Day-to-day operation of the City is the responsibility of the City Manager, who oversees 340 full-time employees. The 2009 FY City annual general fund budget is $30.5 million. The City Manager exercises direct supervision over all departments and employees of the City.

Paducah has a full-service, well-regarded Police Department comprised of 79 sworn and 14 civilian employees. Its current departmental budget is approximately $8.7 million.

The City is looking for a proven local government law enforcement manager with a Bachelor degree (Masters preferred) and 10 years of experience with at least five years at the command level of the organization. Must be a strong manager and leader who understands the needs of and has the ability to lead and develop a young force. Service in a community with significant minority population, management experience in a unionized environment and career success with community oriented policing are desired. The ideal candidate will be fair and consistent and will have strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate with staff, the community and elected officials, a high level of honesty and integrity, and the vision necessary to move the department forward.
